Check if your building is listed in the Maryland BEPS benchmarking program.
The Maryland BEPS Covered Buildings List (CBL) is a database of commercial and multifamily properties that must comply with the state’s Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS). It identifies which buildings are required to benchmark their energy use and report data to the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE).
You can use the Maryland BEPS Covered Buildings Lookup tool above. Simply search by your building’s address, city, ZIP code, or UBID to see if it appears on the official list.
BEPS generally applies to commercial and multifamily buildings larger than 35,000 square feet. Smaller buildings or those owned by certain public entities may be exempt, but property owners should confirm with MDE or their local jurisdiction.
If your building is listed, you are required to benchmark your annual energy use using ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and meet the energy performance targets set by the Maryland BEPS program. Regular reporting is also mandatory.
Covered buildings must submit benchmarking data annually. This helps track progress toward energy reduction goals and ensures statewide compliance with BEPS regulations.
The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) oversees the BEPS program, including the creation and maintenance of the Covered Buildings List and enforcement of compliance deadlines.
If your building does not appear on the Covered Buildings List, you may not be required to benchmark or comply with BEPS at this time. However, new buildings can be added in future updates, so it’s important to check regularly.
